HISTORY

S N M College is situated in Maliankara, a coastal village in the northern end of Ernakulam District in Kerala. Backward communities form the majority of population in this area. There was a time in the history of Kerala when basic human rights like the right to use public roads were denied to them. Sree Nrarayana Guru, a social reformer, led a reform movement in Kerala against these social evils, rejected casteism, and promoted new values of spiritual freedom and social equality. He stressed the need for the spiritual and social uplift of the downtrodden by their own efforts through the establishment of temples and educational institutions. In the process, he denounced the superstitions that clouded the fundamental Hindu cultural convention of caste. It was in this time in 1882 that a handful of people, inspired by Guru's ideals, joined hands to establish an organization namely Hindu Matha Dharma Paripalana Sabha (HMDP sabha) at Moothakunnam.

HMDP Sabha became the light and power for the downtrodden section of people in this area. Visionaries in the Sabha knew that freedom from all social discrimination can come only from education. Sabha began its educational service in 1922 by starting a middle School. It was upgraded to High School in 1934. Following this a stream of prestigious institutions, a Basic Training School (1953), a Training College ( 1960), an Industrial Training Centre (1979), a Higher Secondary School (2000) and an Engineering College ( 2000), were started in Moothakunnam and Maliankara . Bearing in letter and spirit the name of Sree Narayana Guru, S N M College Maliankara was inaugurated in 1964 by Sri. Sahodaran Ayyappan, an ardent disciple of Guru.

The Institution had a humble beginning as a junior College. Under Graduate courses were started in 1972 and Post Graduate courses in 1983. Two of the Post Graduate Departments are approved Research centres. The College now offers 13 UG Courses and 8 P G Courses. Since its inception, SNM College Maliankara has not only spearheaded the uplift of the socially and educationally backward sections of the society but has also created glorious history of outstanding academic activities thus making itself one of the leading institutions of higher education in the State.
